Toothache
GarlicBasketIt was not uncommon for people with rotting teeth contemplating matrimony to have them extracted before the big day.
In some cases, an acceptable wedding gift was to bear the cost of extraction of all the teeth of the bride or groom for the big day.
Garlic is also recommended for relieving toothache: mix a little garlic with some rock salt, apply to the throbbing tooth and hope for the best.
It might work. If nothing else, people will move away and not bother to ask if you have a toothache.
An earlier cure was to acquire some sulphur and saltpetre, which were then placed in the tooth, causing the tooth to rot and fall out.
