Sinners

bottlesWriters and artists and those seeking late-night drinks in the late 1940s frequented the Catacombs in the Fitzwilliam/Merrion Square area.
The joint was begun in the basement of a house on Fitzwilliam Place by Dickie Wyman.
The Englishman moved to Dublin during the Second World War, following the death of his boyfriend
He  opened a basement club in the flat that he rented and made some money from it by returning empty glass beer bottles the next morning for the refundable deposit on the bottles.
